How to Wash Reusable Swim Diapers

November 16, 2011

Choosing a swim diaper is a lot more fun than cleaning one! But never fear – the cleanup process can be done easily and fast. Follow this guide to sanitarily wash a reusable swim diaper and make it last longer.

Steps to Washing a Swim Diaper

  • Change diapers away from the pool in the bathroom or designated changing area.
  • Report accidents with fecal matter to the pool supervisor immediately. Children are less likely to have solid accidents in the pool than they are liquid leaks, but the pool still needs to be flushed with specific chemicals.
  • Dispose of any waste by flushing it down the toilet. Try to remove as much waste as possible before placing the soiled diaper in a sink or washing machine.
  • You can either hand rinse/wash the diaper in a sink, or machine-wash it in cool or warm water. Use plenty of soap for hand washing!
    • If you use a machine, set the load to the maximum water level to avoid unsanitary build-up in the machine.
    • Use less than half of the recommended amount of detergent by the manufacturer to prevent residue build-up, and avoid fabric softeners, bleach, and perfumes.
    • Run an extra final rinse to ensure everything gets removed.
  • Thoroughly wash your hands and child's bottom after changing.
  • Air-dry the clean diaper in a shaded area. Placing it in the dryer may melt any synthetic materials, though some swim diapers can be tumble dried on low. Be sure to check the manufacturer’s instructions first.

Reusable diapers can be used up to 10 times, or until the fabric starts to break down. Find one with a fun, colorful pattern and comfortable style on SwimOutlet.com.
