Frustrating to charge

by Barbara Fortune

From Livonia, Mi on 3/30/2017

I have had a number of these and I find it very difficult to charge.  I even got a new charging card because the prongs broke and one prong is again broken.  I plug it in and it either turns on the music or nothing happens.  I think the magnetic connection just does not work.  It downloaded about 12 songs and disconnected. Last week I thought I fully charged it and only bot 3-4 hours.  I'm getting tired of the same songs over and over.

Major design flaw - corroded metal pins

by Larry

From Kansas on 2/18/2016

While I appreciate the jawbone technology and not having to wear in the ear headphones, these headphones have a major design flaw.  The metallic pins on the device get corroded in only a few weeks of usage.  When corroded, it is impossible to charge or upload music to the device.  The solution is to scrub the metallic pins with rubbing alcohol.  I also lightly scratch the surface with a pin.

Can't get it to work

by Mark

From New York on 1/26/2016

I recently purchased the Duo and cannot get it to work. I charge it overnight, the green light is on the next day but when I unplug and turn it on it turns on for about a second or two, blinks a couple times and goes off (no troubleshooting faq for this one). I downloaded music from the computer and it appears to be loaded into the Duo but then when you try to play nothing!  This is about the 5th finis sound player I've had, they last about 6 months and play well, but then inevitably something happens. Is there another more reliable and user friendly swim MP3 anyone can suggest?  The customer service at Finis is not that accessible, a real project to try and get someone over there.

swimming with music...ahhhh

by harmony gates

From Oakland, CA on 5/10/2019

True

Once you figure out how to add this to your swim protocol, you will love it. It's different. Nothing goes in your ears. You must position the flat surfaces of the unit over your cheekbones. So you must attach either side to your goggle straps. But you must be able to do so without creating a gap between the goggle and your face, or you get leakage..so be sure that your goggles will allow this. I had to switch goggles because of how my goggles' straps fastened to my goggles. If you can get the finis duo on your goggle straps AND have a snug fit on your goggles, you are gold.

The sound is not quite as rich as with in-ear devices. But I found that my waterproof ipod shuffle kept breaking. Or the earbuds would die. So you won't have that problem here. I can use my Mac silicone earplugs (with the tree bud ends), with the duo, and this keeps my ears free of annoying water in the ear canals.

However, if you are an iTunes person, you will have to convert your songs to .mp3 in order to load them up on this. It's a hassle. but you can play them in a playlist order. BUT again, there is no obvious way to know what song you are que'd up to listen to. Also the functions of on/off, volume up and down, and forward or back in the tune list takes some getting used to. It's not really that intuitive. It also takes some watchful monitoring to know when the battery might need to be recharged. I knocked off a star for this challenging user interface situation.

That said, this delivers the tunes I want to hear, reliably. I rarely have to adjust my gear once I get in the pool. I swim hard laps for an hour, and have timed my playlist to match my energy and routine.

A friend swam with a duo and she had problems with the back cable wiggling around a lot and eventually fraying. My newer model employs a more flexible cable, and I don't have the same problem. Just to be sure though, I tuck the cable into my goggle straps. In my cap, goggles, and duo--I look awesome!

Two pairs and still Disappointed

by Nathan

From Frisco, TX on 5/10/2019

I have had two pairs, and I will not buy a third time.  This product is just what I wanted, but it does not work well.  My first pair just stopped charging because the charger connection was not good.  FINIS made some “improvements” to the charging function so I decided to buy a second pair.  I was very attentive to the care of my second pair.  I rinsed the entire MP3 player in fresh water and towel dryed after every swim.  I also washed the charging prones with rubbing alcohol one time per week.  I swim for 45 minutes once or twice a week.  Unfortunately the charging function still became insufficient after just a few months of use.  When I hooked it up to charge the music would turn on or it would not start charging, so I had to always play around with it until it reached the perfect position and hope it stayed exactly that way.  Otherwise it would not charge.  At the same time...the wires were becoming damaged and disconnected at the point where they connect to the ear pieces.  This wire deterioration issue was new...it did not happen to my original pair.  Eventually one of the ear pieces would not play music.  Then, two weeks later the second ear piece would not play music.  Product lived a disappointing life and eventually died despite honest effects to care and maintain.  Will not be buying another one.

Finis Duo underwater MP3

by Mark

From Atlanta GA on 3/9/2018

i'm 57 years old and swim daily. I have used several products but so far and I've only been swimming with them for about 10 days, this product is super cool. It sounds like a stereo underwater. The miles seem to just fly by.

Great Item

by Johnboy

From Enon Ohio on 12/16/2016

Great product, and it is as described.  Quick ship.  They recommend ear plugs and
so do I.  Without ear plugs the volume changes as your ears travel  in and out of the water.   With ear plugs it is a great experience.

Works great!

by Christos

From Grosse Pointe Woods, MI on 2/9/2016

I agree with David M's review, check that one out as I have similarities I would have written about. Bass is indeed missing, but I too NEED earplugs and none of the other eardrum-located buds kep the water out for more than a lap or two. 3 swims in & I'm pretty happy, don't try to playlist this one, just dump everything in it that you might want to listen to.

Not quite as expected

by Jane

From Sedona, AZ on 1/20/2016

I've used the SwimP3 version 2 for several years. I love the bone conduction aspect of these products - no more earbuds or cords to contend with.  Nothing flopping around from getting loose.  The SwimP3, however, allowed you to create folders for playlists and had easy navigation between playlists.  When I got the Duo, I set up my folders (making an assumption that they would have retained the same functionality), but then I noticed in the instructions that there was no way to move between the folders - in essence, playlist functionality was gone.  Playlists were a big selling point for me before, and I was disappointed.  I also notice that the Duo forces you to put the controls on the left-hand side when most of us are right-handed.  Go figure!  I will probably keep the Duo, because I love the bone conduction, but it lacks by comparison to its predecessor.

breaks within 6 months... and I have tried this 3 times

by wilson

From California on 8/15/2019

The wire connecting to the pods is weak and breaks within 6 months.  I have bought this device 3 times over the last 2 years ... and ALL have failed the same way within 6 months.  It is a shame because I do like until it breaks. But it is greatly over priced for what it is... and to have to buy one over few months is frustrating and I will never buy another one again.

Short life

by Jo

From South Carolina on 4/8/2021

I had 2 of these waterproof headsets. Used thiem 3x per week for one hour each time. Both stopped working as soon as the warranty expired. The sound quality was excellent, but my goggles always leaked with the player attached to the goggle band. Won't buy again. Went to Diver and have had my set for 7 years with no problems.

So far, so good

by Jami

From PARRISH, FL on 3/8/2021

These stay on my goggles all the time now. Love music underwater. Charging is going well so far. Uploading mp3 music was a bit of a pain from iTunes, but worked. The sound is great when you’re not moving underwater, kind of bubbly/distorted while swimming but it doesn’t bother me at all. In all I’d buy these again. Time will tell if they hold up.

Works well

by Mark G.

From Aspen, CO on 7/17/2020

I have had no real issues with this product. I do think it should be charged after each use (I swim about 1 hour or so). I tried to use it for podcast but the sound clarity was not sufficient. Overall it works great for music.

Love it! Even though it’s not perfect

by Erik

From Vienna, VA on 2/15/2020

I’ve had these for about 5-6 years. I swim about 2,400 meters 3-days a week. Love being able to listen to music while swimming. I’ve used other types, but this has the best sound.  The design doesn’t rely on buds that keep falling out of my ears on flip turns. Saw some comments about people having issues with the charging pins - I’ve never had a problem with them and don’t do anything special with them - I just throw them in an outside mesh pocket. They do behave funny sometimes after about 3-years - I push power on and light goes on, then light goes off and doesn’t play - I’ve figured out that it will eventually start playing (it’s like it’s stuck processing something) - It doesn’t happen every time, just sometimes. Just noticed that the wires have become exposed at the connection points after 6-years of use.  They have had a good run.  In the absence of anything better existing, I would definitely buy again.

I love this!

Christmas Gifts - but I've owned one for years...

by OBXBeacher

From Manteo, NC on 12/21/2019

I have had one of these for years and still think they are the best on the market and so purchased two as gifts this year.  Swim on!

Love it

by Uki82

From San Diego, CA on 12/20/2019

This mp3 player is awesome, no more struggling with earbuds that fall out.

The only annoying part is that you need to plug it into your computer to upload the music, and that you cannot make playlists (either play them in order uploaded or in shuffle).

Aside from that they sound great, they allow me to relax and block out all the annoying noise people make in a crowded pool (specially during the summer).

Initially I had to return them because the strap broke. However, Finis replaced them  and I received a new pair that has a better material and hasn't ripped. I use them 7 days a week for an hour swimming laps in the pool. I've had them for a year now with no issues.

detached wire

by Bella

From Michigan on 12/10/2019

First of all I love listening to music when I swim. However I’ve had problem with the mp3. The wire on the mp3 detachs for no reason at all. I’m not rough at all. So I have to use electrical tape so the wires aren’t  exposed. How many times has that happened? Several. I wish they can create one that this doesn’t happen☹️

When I see it on charger it's solid green, I take it off and turn it on only solid green for seconds then off. How long does it need to charge and what signals does it show as it will always show solid green while charging but once you take it off it doesn't stay solid green.

I don't believe you "need" earplugs, waterproof or otherwise, however...in my experience with this and the previous model of the finis I use earplugs purchased at CVS or Walmart. Initially I did not, fearing I wouldn't be able to hear the lifeguard, but got tired of having water in my ears. I started with the squishy ones and now use the soft rubber ear plugs with the string attached. Not only can I hear the lifeguard whistle just fine but the plugs block out everything else going on and make it possible to hear the finis with my head out of the water. The sound seems more clear as well. So while you don't need them I recommend wearing them anyway. Which ones? You have to try different ones until you find one that you find to be comfortable in your ears. I hope this helps...thanks for asking!

Answered by VM

Since the device uses bone-conduction technology, you do not need earbuds and there is no way to connect earbuds to it anyhow. The sound through the skull is just fine for the kind of device it is.

About This Brand

FINIS

FINIS is Latin for "The End" or "Finale", and it signifies in the name of this company both the developmental goals that swimmers have and the end that they strive to reach—the finish line. Founded in 1993, FINIS provides highly technical competition suits, training equipment, child water-safety products and high end goggles. Their very popular SwiMP3 water-proof digital media player is revolutionary in its streamlined design, enabling a swimmer to listen to music while practicing laps and other exercises in the pool.
